About Avila Beach

Avila Beach is the Central Coast's structure-fishing capital. Charter boats out of Port San Luis work hard reefs between the Point San Luis lighthouse and the Diablo Canyon area for rockfish, lingcod, and bocaccio, with seasonal swings to salmon, albacore, sanddab, and crab. The harbor sheltering it all is one of the warmest stretches of water on the Central Coast — a south-facing geometry behind 600-foot Point San Luis that keeps the bay calmer and warmer than open coast to either side.

The harbor

The working harbor is Port San Luis, about 1.3 miles west of the village. John Harford built the original pier in 1873 to ship goods out of San Luis Obispo; the Point San Luis Lighthouse went up in 1890; voters approved the modern Port San Luis Harbor District in 1954. Today the district runs the harbor as a mooring point for recreational sailing and fishing boats, with a Cal Poly research pier, boat repair, restaurants, and RV camping onsite. Charter boats run out of Pier 3.

Grounds

Local grounds lean hard on structure. Charter trips fish reefs between the Point San Luis lighthouse and the Diablo Canyon area for rockfish, lingcod, and bottom species. Recent half-day counts off Port San Luis and Shell Beach show mixed rockfish, bocaccio, copper rockfish, and lingcod hauls. Longer south runs reach toward Point Purísima for lingcod and red rockfish.

Regulations

Regulations tighten to the north. The Point Buchon State Marine Reserve covers 6.68 square miles over 2.5 miles of coastline between Coon Creek and the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant and prohibits all take. The adjoining Point Buchon State Marine Conservation Area covers 12.19 square miles of deeper water (200–400 feet) where only recreational salmon and albacore take is allowed. Charter boats out of Port San Luis work south and offshore of these closures.

Getting there

Climate is mild year-round — 47–49°F winter lows to 80–82°F summer highs with about 15 inches of rain concentrated December through March. Access is via US 101 and Avila Beach Drive.
