About Morro Bay

Morro Bay is the only all-weather small-craft harbor on California's Central Coast between Santa Barbara and Monterey — which means the local fleet runs when neighboring ports get blown out. Charter boats target rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, ocean whitefish, and petrale sole on the local reefs year-round, with Dungeness crab, salmon, and albacore added seasonally. Morro Rock, the 581-foot volcanic plug at the harbor entrance, marks the run out.

The harbor

Morro Bay Landing operates at 1215 Embarcadero on the working waterfront — an aggregator of independently owned vessels rather than a single-operator fleet. The local economy still runs on commercial fishing, and the active commercial fleet shares the same dock real estate as the sportfishing operation, which means same-day catch reports double as fishing intel.

Grounds

Grounds run north and south along the Central Coast reef system. Most rockfish work happens within a half-day's run on local reefs. Longer trips reach Cape San Martin to the north on 12-hour runs (Endeavor on Morro Bay Landing) and Point Sal to the south on Patriot Sportfishing trips out of the harbor. Target species across the local fleet: black, blue, and vermilion rockfish, bocaccio, olive rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, ocean whitefish, and greenlings, with seasonal Dungeness crab, salmon, and albacore.

Regulations

Three CDFW marine protected areas frame the local fishery. The Point Buchon State Marine Reserve lies 8 miles south of Morro Bay between Coon Creek and Diablo Canyon — 6.68 square miles with no take of any marine resource. The adjacent Point Buchon SMCA permits recreational and commercial take of salmon and albacore only. The Cambria SMCA and State Marine Park to the north (6.26 square miles) permits recreational take within regular fishing regulations. The Piedras Blancas SMR and SMCA, roughly 19 square miles farther north, restricts the SMCA portion to recreational and commercial salmon and albacore. Daily limits across the local rockfish fleet run 10 rockcod and 2 lingcod.

Getting there

Highway 1 is the primary access. Highway 41 ties the city inland to Atascadero and the US 101 corridor. Climate supports a year-round fishing window: July averages 60°F, January averages 55°F.
