Coho Salmon

Season: Only when a California ocean salmon season is open, and dates change every year. In 2026 the openers were April 11 (Pigeon Point south), June 13 (Oregon border to the 40/10 line) and June 27 (Pigeon Point north to Point Arena).Adults usually 8 to 12 lbs – NOAA gives 8 to 12 lbs and 24 to 30 inches as the usual adult size

Coho are the bonus fish nobody gets to keep. When the California Chinook season is open, a coho can eat a troll rig meant for kings, and state rules require every one to be released. Learn the two-check ID (gums, then tail) so you can release it fast and alive.

Can you keep coho salmon in California?

No. Coho (silver salmon) retention is prohibited in all California ocean waters. Release every coho immediately, even when Chinook season is open.

How to tell a coho from a Chinook

A white gum line and spots only on the upper tail lobe mean coho. A black gum line and spots on both tail lobes mean Chinook. Check before anything goes in the box.

Where do anglers hook coho in California?

Only incidentally, on Chinook trolls wherever a salmon season is open. They are a Pacific Northwest sport fish, and California coho cannot be kept.

About Coho Salmon

Coho are the silver salmon. They are smaller than Chinook, with a bright chrome flank and a metallic blue-green back. NOAA lists adults at roughly 8 to 12 lbs and 24 to 30 inches.

California is the southern end of the coho range, which runs from Alaska to central California and peaks from southeast Alaska to central Oregon. The state's ocean salmon rules allow Chinook only, so a coho that eats your troll rig is a release fish. That makes this page about two skills: identifying the fish quickly, and letting it go in good shape.

Coho here are protected. The Central California Coast population is federally endangered and the Southern Oregon and Northern California Coast population is federally threatened (CDFW).

How to Catch

You do not target coho in California. They show up as an unwanted extra while anglers troll for Chinook in open seasons. CDFW suggests fishing deeper, because coho stay in the top 30 feet, and using larger lures that Chinook prefer, to reduce the chance of hooking one.

If one eats, keep it in the water, get the hook out quickly and release it.

Eating Profile

Not applicable in California. Coho cannot be kept from the ocean here, so there is no table fish to talk about. Chinook is the salmon you can keep.

Common Mistakes

  • Bringing a coho aboard to check it. Look at the gums and tail while it is still in the water or in the net.
  • Playing it to exhaustion. A tired fish handled for photos is less likely to survive. Short fight, quick release.
  • Going by size alone. A small Chinook and a coho can look alike. Use the gums and tail spots.
  • Putting it in the fish box to sort out later. Retention is prohibited, so it never goes in the box.

Salmon Season Notes

Seasons change every year and sometimes in season, so confirm on the CDFW salmon page before you go. For 2026, the Pacific Fishery Management Council adopted these sport openers: April 11 from Pigeon Point south to the Mexican border, June 13 from the Oregon border to the 40/10 line off southern Humboldt County, and June 27 north of Pigeon Point (Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, Bodega Bay up to Point Arena). CDFW regional pages updated October 1, 2026 show the recreational fishery closed for the rest of the year in the Pigeon Point to Mexico area and the Klamath Management Zone, with 2027 dates due in April 2027. See Salmon for the Chinook side.

Where to Catch Coho Salmon in California

  • Coho are an incidental catch, not a target. There is no sourced list of California coho hot spots.
  • They can turn up anywhere the Chinook season is open. In 2026 that was Pigeon Point south to the Mexican border (including Monterey Bay) from April 11, and north of Pigeon Point (Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, Bodega Bay to Point Arena) from June 27.
  • Historically California coho spawned from the Smith River south to the San Lorenzo River (CDFW), so the fish most likely to meet a Bay Area or north coast troll are those stocks.

Diet

How to Catch Coho Salmon

Techniques

  • You do not target coho in California. CDFW advice for avoiding them is to troll deeper, since coho hold in the top 30 feet, and to use larger lures that favor Chinook.
  • If one is hooked, keep it in the water, get the hook out quickly and let it swim off. Retention is prohibited, so there is no reason to bring it aboard.
  • Check the gums and tail while the fish is still in the water or in the net, before it goes anywhere near the fish box.

Regulations

Retention of coho (silver) salmon is prohibited in all California ocean waters (14 CCR 27.80(b)). Every coho you hook must be released, even when the Chinook season is open. The 2026 CDFW ocean salmon page lists a bag limit of 2 salmon per day, any species except coho, with a 20 inch minimum for the fall season. Seasons are set each year with the Pacific Fishery Management Council and change in season, so check the CDFW salmon page or the Ocean Salmon Hotline at (707) 576-3429 before your trip. Checked against the CDFW salmon page on October 8, 2026.

When boats actually landed it

Not enough data yet — too few reported trips to show a reliable catch pattern.

Did You Know?

NOAA says coho spend about a year in streams and roughly 1.5 years at sea before returning to spawn, usually at ages 3 to 4. All coho die after spawning.
