Dana Point's tackle shops sit at the south end of Orange County, where Dana Point Harbor launches the local fleet. Hogan's Bait & Tackle, on Pacific Coast Highway across from Doheny State Beach, is the area's full-service shop — live and frozen bait, a deep tackle inventory, rod-and-reel repair, and custom rod building. Down in the harbor, Dana Wharf Sportfishing has operated since 1971 and keeps a tackle shop inside the landing, selling tackle and Dana Wharf gear for its half-day, full-day, and offshore trips. Between them, a Dana Point trip can start with live bait and a serviced rod at Hogan's, or tackle and a boat ticket at the harbor landing.

The fishing runs on the kelp and the offshore banks. Calico bass and sand bass hold on the inshore kelp year-round, with rockfish on the deeper reefs and California halibut on the sand. White seabass are a spring target along the Dana Point Headlands kelp, and yellowtail stage from late spring into fall. In warm-water years the summer-and-fall offshore season brings dorado and bluefin and yellowfin tuna, with longer runs to structure like the 209 Bank and San Clemente Island. Dana Point's party and charter boats run from Dana Wharf Sportfishing in the harbor.
