Ventura's tackle shops serve a fleet that runs to the northern Channel Islands out of Ventura Harbor. Eric's Tackle Shop, at 2127 E Thompson Boulevard a few blocks off the water, is an independent shop known for custom rod building and rod-and-reel repair, with big-game, island, bass, and fly gear; it opens Monday through Saturday. Down at the harbor, Ventura Sportfishing runs the landing's tackle shop at 1500 Anchors Way Drive — live bait and tackle, per its own site, plus rentals, ice, and licenses for its island trips. Nearby on Harbor Boulevard, Hyun's Tackle Shop is a retail and online shop carrying rods, reels, line, lures, nets, and gaffs. Between the three, Ventura anglers can have a rod built or repaired, grab live bait and a boat ticket at the harbor, or shop a full tackle wall.

The county fishes the Santa Barbara Channel and the northern Channel Islands — Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel. Rockfish are the year-round mainstay over the island reefs, with calico bass and California halibut from spring through fall. White seabass turn on in late spring when the squid show, yellowtail stage at the islands from spring into fall, and bluefin tuna move within range in summer and fall. Ventura's sportfishing boats run from Ventura Harbor.
