H&M Landing at 2803 Emerson Street is the oldest continuously operating sportfishing landing on the U.S. West Coast, founded November 1, 1935 by Howard Minor, Ralph "Barney" Miller Sr., Tony Hoss, and Bill Hoss. The first trip departed April 6, 1935 — the Mascot II carried 35 anglers to the Coronado Islands and brought back 136 yellowtail. H&M marked its 50th anniversary in 1985 and its 80th in 2015. The Miller family resumed ownership in 1977, forming a partnership with general manager Phil Lobred in 1984 until Frank Ursitti took over as owner/general manager in 2015.

Fleet

Core boats listed include:

  • Grande — full-day Coronados / yellowtail
  • Malihini — 3/4-day local
  • Premier — half-day (6:30 AM and 1 PM departures)
  • Old Glory — 1.5-day bluefin / yellowfin / yellowtail
  • Legend — 2-day
  • Producer — overnight
  • Horizon — 2.5-day bluefin

Milestones

In 1960 H&M added the Malihini, the landing's first vessel exceeding 80 feet. In 1971 the landing commissioned the H&M Speed Twin — "the first aluminum catamaran sportfisher on the West Coast" — which broke a world record by water-skiing 58 people simultaneously. By 1969, H&M was "the world's largest sportfishing fleet" with eight open-party boats. A current 2026 promotion lets kids fish free on half-day trips with each paid adult through code KIDS26, April 20 – May 22.
